As the story progresses, their relationship blossoms into a deep romance. Eloise felt let-down over the fact that her first impression of him was not what she expected she noticed that Philip was emotionally neglecting his children, Oliver and Amanda. Upon their first meeting at Romney Hall, which was a shock to both parties, their introduction was rocky and awkward. She used a hired carriage and off she went. She used the ball being thrown by her sister to run away so she could meet Phillip without the judgment of her family. Eloise didn't like the idea of being alone, and decided to meet Sir Phillip to see if they would suit. Eloise was shocked, but happy she felt lonely due to the fact that she and Penelope planned to grow old as spinsters together. Soon after, her brother Colin became engaged to Penelope Featherington, Eloise's best friend. Surprised, Eloise didn't answer the letter. One day, Philip sends Eloise a letter, asking for her hand in marriage. She heard of Marina's passing and sent a friendly letter of condolence to her presumably grieving husband Sir Phillip Crane.

It took her many years to get past this anxiety and worry, as she grew up with her mother around. She often stayed close to her mother, Violet, afterwards because she was afraid of losing her mother the same way.

Eloise was haunted by the tragedy, and could not bear to even think or talk about what happened. Eloise was the one with her father, Edmund, when he collapsed and died from a bee sting.
